THE PROBLEM





Hundreds of millions of Africans need routine medical care today: surgery, maternal care, HIV treatment, trauma -- the same kinds of conditions which bring a Westerner to the doctor. The major barrier to Africans receiving treatment is lack of health care capacity: too few health professionals, too little infrastructure, too few supplies. Many African countries have one doctor for every 30,000-40,000 people.

To strengthen mission healthcare providers to make an enduring positive impact on the health of the poor in Africa.



OUR WAY





Much of the functioning healthcare in Africa is provided by Christian medical missionaries from the West and their African Christian colleagues. ​These missionary physicians commit their entire careers towards treating patients, training African colleagues, creating systems and building institutions in very difficult conditions throughout sub-Saharan Africa. They routinely do what their colleagues in the United States regard as impossible when they learn about it. Yet none of these servants have any significant or dependable financial or managerial support. AMHF provides them with these resources, enabling these missionary physicians to serve the African poor comprehensively and to train young Africans for the future.

C-sections: 20% of african women who need one, get one





The first successful C-section in the West occurred 400 years ago. Today, maternal mortality and birth injury remain high because women don't have reliable access to care. We fund safe motherhood programs, C-sections, nurse and midwifery training, and anesthesia to make this care available.



50 million africans need surgery now





World Bank President Dr. Jim Kim has called surgery the "orphan stepchild of global health." 10-20% of preventable deaths are due to surgical conditions. Yet there is often only 1 surgeon for every 250,000 people. We train surgeons, renovate operating theaters, train anesthetists, and fund surgeries.



tanzania: 1 doctor for 50,000 people





The World Health Organization recommends at least one doctor for 1,000 people. Few African countries achieve this goal. AMHF has sponsored junior doctor training in Tanzania and medical students from South Sudan to bridge this gap.



malaria: 2 of every 5 malawian children afflicted every year





That's right. At the end of the rainy season, 40% of Malawian children under age 5 test positive for malaria. We fund Katawa Clinic near Lake Malawi, which treats 14,000 proven cases of the disease every year. The elders tells us the number of funerals is way down.

Jon Fielder, MD



President



Dr. Fielder has been a medical missionary in Malawi and Kenya since 2002. He trained in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Jon co-founded AMHF and serves as President and also provides teaching and clinical support to Maua Methodist Hospital and other mission clinics in Kenya, where he lives with his wife and three children. Following the mission model, Dr. Fielder raises his support to serve with AMHF.

Jonathan Mwiindi, MHA


VP for Programs


A Kenyan native, Jonathan holds a Masters in Healthcare Administration from Seton Hall University. He formerly directed the pharmacy and HIV program at Kijabe Hospital and helped the University of Maryland Institute of Human Virology establish its Kenyan office. He served as coordinator for the global health program at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Jonathan lives with his wife and two children in Indiana.

Kenneth Miriti, RCO, MPH



VP of Operations



Kenneth trained in clinical medicine at Kenya Medical Training College before joining the HIV clinic at Kijabe Hospital. Later he helped establish a leading HIV clinical training program and served as a clinical educator with the University of Maryland. He is the country coordinator for Hospital Support Organization and serves as AMHF's VP of Operations. Kenneth lives in Naivasha, Kenya with his wife and two children.

mark gerson



Chairman





Mark is the co-founder and co-chairman of Gerson Lehrman Group, which enables clients to learn about a diverse array of business subjects by connecting them with experts in relevant fields. He is also co-founder and co-chairman of Thuzio, which provides businesses and professionals with an all access pass to celebrity talent through database, booking and event services. Mark is also the international chairman of United Hatzalah, which is a distributed network of first responders in Israel. By activating the responder closes to a trauma, volunteers can arrive at a victim's side in minutes. Mr. Gerson is the author of many books and articles, including intellectual history, education, basketball, and the Biblical Jonah. He lives in New York City with his wife, Rabbi Erica Gerson, and their three children.



Jon Fielder



President





Dr. Fielder graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College and with honor from Baylor College of Medicine, where he was elected Alpha Omega Alpha. He trained in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was named "Most Oslerian." Jon has served as a missionary doctor in Kenya and Malawi since 2002. In 2006 he acted as senior technical advisor with the Institute of Human Virology of the University of Maryland, providing clinical direction to the AIDSRelief consortium. He has published 15 peer-reviewed articles and is the author of “Tuberculosis in the Era of HIV: A Clinical Manual for Care Providers Working in Africa and Other Resource-Limited Settings.” Dr. Fielder and his wife Amanda live with their three children outside Nairobi, Kenya.



Jonathan Mwiindi



VP, Programs





Mr. Mwiindi is a native of Kenya. He joined Kijabe Hospital in 2003, first as pharmacy manager and later as director of Kijabe AIDSRelief. He has served as consultant to the Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network, a role which afforded him the opportunity to travel widely in Africa and to become intimately acquainted with the mission healthcare system. In 2006 he became Kenyan country manager for the Institute of Human Virology of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Since 2009 he has served as program manager of the Global Health Coordinating Center at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Jonathan holds a masters from Seton Hall and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Health at the University of Texas. He and wife Lily, a physician, live with their two children in Indiana.

Board Member





Greg is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College in California and has worked for Valiant Capital, Sureview Capital and MIG Capital as an analyst. He lives in Newport Beach, California.



scott marcello



Board Member





Scott is formerly National Leader of KPMG’s U.S. Financial Services business and member of KPMG’s Board of Directors. He has also served in a variety of other leadership and client service roles over his 27 year career. Scott joined KPMG in 1985 and served in 5 different offices, including the New York operating and National offices. Over his career, he served some of KPMG's largest financial services clients in various capacities and has been a frequent speaker at industry, client, and other forums. Scott received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in accounting from Stetson University in Deland, Florida. Mr. Marcello serves on the board of the St. John's School of Risk Management and Actuarial Sciences and Heritage Christian School, and is board member and treasurer of the Greater New York Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Board Member





Sean Fieler graduated from Williams College in 1995 with a degree in Political Economy and was the 1994 recipient of the Branson Memorial Scholarship. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, he joined Equinox Partners, L.P. In 2001, he was named a managing member of Equinox Partners, L.P. and the Kuroto Fund, L.P. Mr. Fieler is chairman of the American Principles Project and of the National Bible Association. He is a board member of the Witherspoon Institute, Institute for American Values, and the Dominican Foundation. Mr. Fieler lives in Princeton, New Jersey with his wife, son and daughter.



Pavi thomas



Treasurer





Pastor Thomas is the lead pastor of Heritage Christian Church in Westerville, Ohio, which provides administrative support to AMHF. He has been member of the senior leadership team of Great Commission Ministries since 1995. Pavi has served as a lead pastor, church planter, respected teacher and mentor, and developer of a sophisticated distance-education theological model. Pastor Thomas holds a PhD from Ohio State University, is the creator of eight graduate-level courses, and has been the main session speaker at conferences on several continents.
