ACADEMIC DAYS

Fridays are our academic days. We have a multitude of learning methods and pride ourselves on our didactic variety. We currently use a modular curriculum that spans 2 years. Quality improvement, Board review, PEM practice, Journal club, ‘What I learned’, guest lecturers, mock codes, day trips to ‘out-of-house’ CME conferences and Topic review are among the examples of what fill our academic days. Once in 6 weeks, we have a combined EM/Peds EM academic day where we organize a day of teaching geared to our sizeable Emergency Medicine department (a total of 93 EM residents for the year 2014!).

As SUNY Downstate is a large teaching center, fellows work closely with and help mentor medical students, Physician Assistant students, EM, Pediatric and Family Practice residents when they rotate through the Pediatric ED. Throughout the year, fellows are also scheduled to help with PALS teaching, (before graduation they are credentialed as a PALS instructor) and present lectures to medical students and the pediatric residency program of SUNY Downstate. We pride ourselves in producing excellent educators.
