What Is Depression?

The definition of depression: feelings of severe despondency and dejection. As someone who suffers with depression myself I have come to learn that the dictionary definition doesn't fully explain what depression is. For myself, I think of depression as continuous sadness for a long period of time that consumes everything and anything going on in my life. I feel hopeless and weak. Nothing matters. Many people suffer from a depression that is formed by a chemical imbalance in the brain that we are unable to control unless with some sort of medication. Many medications can make depression significantly better or make it worse. Some depression is just temporary based on a situation such as a breakup or a death in the family. Another depression forms from either genetics or imbalances in the brain at birth or just growing older. As humans there is only so much we can do to fix something like depression because unfortunately it is all in the brain. That being said, it is a very sensitive place in the body to feel weak. The important part about all of this is that it really is all CHEMICAL. I do not mean to yell, but when we feel hopeless or suicidal this is why. It is not something that we can help but it is something we can fix.
